FAIRY TALE SCIENCE

Can you help Jack escape the beanstalk by designing a zip line?

Try different materials for the cable: string, yarn, cord, ribbon for example.

Try different slopes. What angle works best for the cable material?

What can be used in place of a pulley to slide along the cable?

Design a harness or basket to carry Jack along the zip line.

Using a small figure for Jack, test your design. Make improvements if necessary.

The Giant at the Top of the Beanstalk

Materials:

Paper
Pencil
Ruler
Eraser
Coloring materials

Using a ruler, Draw a dot halfway along the top of paper. Then do the same for the bottom. Now, draw a line connecting these two points.

Draw a line across the top of the paper, half and inch from the top. Then draw the giant's head above the line.

Draw another line, this time, 1 ½ inches from the top. This is the giant's waist line. Draw an arm on each side of the waist line, then, an arch from the bottom left and right corners to the dot at the bottom of the page. These arches are the giant's shoes.

Above each shoe, just below the waist line, draw another arch. These are the giant's pants.

Erase any unnecessary guide lines.

Draw a background behind the giant.

Remember to go back and add details and color!
