What Is Digital Painting?
So you might already exist familiar with traditional media, such equally watercolor, oils, or acrylic – and now you're wondering.. "what is digital painting?"
Digital painting is a new medium that lets the states create beautiful artwork, without the messiness of painting with inks or oils. Information technology still requires many of the aforementioned skills and techniques as traditional painting (no, you lot can't just create art at the click of a button… even so), but it's also easier in many ways.
Instead of painting on sail or paper, digital painting allows you to pigment directly onto a reckoner, which has a number of astonishing advantages:
- Information technology's a lot less messy, and you tin can do it in fifty-fifty the smallest spaces – equally long equally you've got space to fix your tablet (and mayhap a estimator), you're good to go!
- It's a lot faster, equally yous don't demand to wait for paints to dry
- It will let you to work faster and more creatively – you can utilize powerful digital tools like layers to unlock entirely new ways of working
The but things you demand to become started with digital painting are a graphics tablet, and painting software of your choice.
Don't worry if you're unsure where to begin – in this guide I'll walk you through it all stride-by-step.
Let'south begin…
What tools do I need to get started with digital painting?
To get started with digital painting, you will need just two things: a tablet, and some painting software.
Choosing Your Hardware
In that location are three main categories of graphic tablets:
Graphic Tablet
Brandish Tablet
"All-In-Ane" Tablet
Graphic Tablets
These are the cheapest models, and what near artists (myself included) offset out with.
They generally have just two components: a touch-pad, and a stylus (a digital pen), though fancier models will likewise have a number of buttons and dials along the side. Because these tablets don't have screens, you will need a laptop or calculator to plug them into (ordinarily via a USB cablevision)
Pros:
- Cheapest option, and totally good enough to get started with
- No batteries or charging necessary
- No screen to get damaged
Cons:
- You have to keep your optics on the computer screen, significant you can't watch your easily as you pigment - this can take some getting used to
- Require a reckoner
Almost popular models:
- Wacom Intuos (highly recommended beginner'southward tablet!)
- Huion 1060 (as well a good beginner's tablet, larger but slightly less precise)
- Wacom Intuos Pro (if you have the budget, invest in this - it'due south the college-end version of the Wacom Intuos)
Pro-Tip: I would recommend you get a tablet that has a cartoon area of at to the lowest degree six″ ten 3.seven″. Y'all'll need this to create fluid, dynamic strokes.
Display Tablets
Got a little extra upkeep? Consider investing in a display tablet!
Brandish tablets function like graphic tablets, just with a built-in monitor. Y'all can draw directly onto a screen, which feels more than intuitive (especially when yous're used to painting on paper or sheet).
Pros:
- Drawing on a screen feels more natural than a touch-pad
- Let yous to work more accurately
Cons:
- More expensive
- May develop 'expressionless pixels' over fourth dimension
- Require a computer
Nearly popular models:
- Huion Kamvas Pro 13 (about half the cost of other similar models - best value for coin)
- Wacom Cintiq sixteen" (cheaper, more portable version of the full-sized Cintiq)
- Wacom Cintiq 24" (4K) (one of the best tablets currently available, this is a professional tool, but unfortunately besides at a professional cost)
"All-In-I" Tablets
These include popular tablets like the iPad Pro or Microsoft Surface Pro. The large advantage is that you won't need an extra laptop or computer to plug your tablet into – these are substantially a tablet and computer ii-in-1. This makes them very portable – you can have them with you wherever you lot go. The downside is that they are more expensive, and you have a very limited selection of software bachelor to you. Important: If yous cull to use an Apple iPad, yous will also need a stylus with pressure level sensitivity . The Apple Pencil has built in pressure sensitivity, but it merely works with the iPad Pro – if you lot are using a regular iPad there are options like the Adonit Pixel Stylus.
Pros:
- Drawing on a screen feels more natural than a touch-pad
- Portable, no need to bring a laptop with yous
Cons:
- Fairly expensive
- Express software options
Most popular models:
- iPad Pro (rapidly becoming one of the near popular tools for digital illustrators, as it allows y'all to use the Procreate app)
- Microsoft Surface Pro (amazingly, you can actually run the total version of Photoshop on this tablet)
- Wacom Mobile Studio Pro (essentially a portable Cintiq, very powerful but prohibitively expensive for most beginners)
Digital Painting Software
There are a lot of different programs available for digital painting, and then to make your life easier I would propose you get one of these three:
Adobe Photoshop
Krita
Procreate
If you're using an iPad Pro, use Procreate. For all other devices, I'd recommend Adobe Photoshop or Krita.
Adobe Photoshop
Toll: $nine.99/month (on the Creative Cloud "Photography" Programme)
If you desire to get serious almost digital painting, I highly recommend Adobe Photoshop. It's the most powerful software available for painting, and because it's become the industry standard you lot'll find the most training & lessons on it.
> Click HERE For a Complimentary 30-Day Trial
Krita
Price: Free!
Krita is a free and open-source alternative to Adobe Photoshop. It's non quite as powerful, though it'due south certainly adept plenty to become started if y'all're on a express budget. Merely be enlightened that you won't observe as much training on it online, and if you want to ane day work professionally in an in-house studio or agency, you may demand to eventually switch to Adobe Photoshop.
> Click Hither to download for free
Procreate
Toll: $nine.99 (1-time payment)
Procreate has been taking the art world past storm in the last few years. It's very calorie-free-weight and like shooting fish in a barrel to use, and while information technology's defective some of Photoshops features, more are being added to information technology all the fourth dimension. Unfortunately information technology'southward currently only bachelor for iPad.
> Click HERE to Get Procreate
Other Software
While I recommend y'all stick to i of the 3 programs higher up, there are other options bachelor to yous. Other pop painting programs include:
- Gimp (free)
- Clip Studio Paint Pro ($49.99)
- Art Studio Pro (macOS and iOS) ($11.99)
- ArtRage ($79)
- Corel Painter ($379)
Pro-Tip: At the terminate of the twenty-four hour period, picking your software is a thing of preference. With enough exercise you'll be able to create professional looking artwork in any software. Based on my experiences I would recommend y'all pick i of 3 programs I listed above, but if yous'd prefer to use another app, and then become for information technology!
Overwhelmed? Here's What I'd Recommend...
It can be piece of cake to become overwhelmed with the amount of choices available, and become lost downwardly a rabbit hole of trying to notice the perfect set up. My communication to you is this: don't overcomplicate it! At the end of the twenty-four hour period, the tools don't make an artist, and you won't notice a huge difference betwixt entry-level and professional-level tablets as a beginner. Start simple! The Wacom Intuos is an cheap and very reliable tablet (I even so use it to this mean solar day!). Pair information technology with Adobe Photoshop – or Krita if you're on a budget – and you're proficient to go!

The not-display tablets like the Wacom Inutos are very much less demanding than, say, a tablet that acts as a second screen! Whatever specs you take should be fine, and it'due south more about if your laptop can handle the *software!*
Photoshop is classically more demanding on computers, so a lot of folks favor SAI or Clip Studio Paint, for example! Y'all can encounter the required specs on the back up and info pages of the software you're interested in.

We focus mainly on teaching the actually of import stuff – the key skills of digital painting like measurement, lighting, values and form, coloring, etc – rather than specific apps or tools.
Every bit long as your program has capabilities to use brushes, layers, and layer styles (like colour dodge or multiply) you should do just fine. 🙂 We too recently added Clip Studio brushes to our free brush set likewise!
